The history of the castle is closely connected to the Colloredo-Mels family, one of the oldest noble families in the region. The famous Italian writer Ippolito Nievo, a descendant of a branch of the Colloredo family, spent time here and wrote much of his work "Confessioni di un Italiano" in 1858.
